Earlier than most families think. Freshman year is the time for foundation work, including building a highlight video and an introductory email. Sophomore year is when active outreach should begin. Junior year is the most critical window, especially for D1 contact, which opens September 1 of junior year. Senior year is still very active for D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO programs.
The NCAA Eligibility Center confirms academic and amateur status for athletes who want to compete at D1 or D2 schools. Most families register at the start of junior year. D3 and NAIA programs do not use the NCAA Eligibility Center, so you should confirm your athlete's division target before deciding on a registration timeline.
